01. Mitsu ferry

This simple little wooden boat crosses the 80 m channel of Mitsuhama Port in about three minutes. The service started more than 500 years ago. The ferry is free of charge. It’s used by people commuting to work and school, and you can take your bicycle aboard too. It’s an essential means of transport for local residents. You can enjoy the tranquil port scenery of fishing boats and shipyards.

02. Strolling the old streets of Mitsu

In the past, the port of Mitsuhama flourished as the maritime gateway of the Matsuyama Domain, and you can still find streets of elegant old houses here. There’s the European-style Hamada Clinic, and the traditional Japanese house, Kimuratei. Many of the buildings are still in use. Traditional houses have been remodeled as a boutique, a very popular bakery, a café where creators gather and so on. If you wander around, you’re sure to discover something interesting. When you’re in Mitsuhama, be sure to try Mitsuhamayaki. It’s similar to Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, and it’s the soul food of Mitsuhama. But the method of cooking it and its seasoning is different from Hiroshima okonomiyaki. With Hiroshima-style, the ingredients are piled on top of the batter, but with Mitsuhamayaki, noodles are placed on the batter before the other ingredients, which include chikuwa and fish flakes. There are about 20 Mitsuhamayaki establishments in the area.
