Starting in September 2017, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture will be hosting DOGO ONSENART 2018, returning the grand art festival to our city for the first time in four years.
The DOGO ONSENART held in 2014 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Dōgo Onsen Honkan's renovation combined the new attraction of art with the regional resource of hot springs in a lively event enjoyed by tourists and citizens alike. These efforts led to DOGO ART 2015 and DOGO ART 2016 in the years that followed. This time, just like four years ago, it is back as a full-scale art festival.
The conceptual theme of DOGO ONSENART (carried over from 2014) is Get Heated up over Art ~Onsen Art Entertainment~. To get heated up is to be infatuated. The art displayed at Dõgo is not something special that is only offered to selected people, but very close at hand to feel and appreciate as you like. The message is for everyone – children, adults, those from near and afar – to have a good time getting their minds and bodies heated up by bathing in the energy of people and the land at Dōgo Onsen, known to be Japan’s oldest hot spring.
Beginning with the pre-opening in September 2017, the festival will set its course with the Grand Opening in April, and develop in conjunction with a variety of events and works set up in hotels and streets for 18 months until its Finale in February 2019.
This year, the works of about 20 artists will adorn the streets of Dōgo expressing homage (praise) as the keyword. Since the Meiji period, the stately appearance of the Dōgo Onsen Honkan has enjoyed popularity as a leading edge hot spring resort. We look back to its existence when the foundation was laid during renovation that looked 100 years into the future so that we could praise the artwork as it lets us, while we undertake the same role by sending the power of today’s art 100 years into the future. The artists and their works are not the only key players. Travelers and locals will join us to create what can only be done and enjoyed at Dōgo Onsen.
