This is a temple in Higashiyama, Kyōto. Founded in 778, Kiyomizu has a long history, even among the temples of Kyōto, and it’s one of the sights not to be missed. Built on the side of Mt. Otowayama, there’s an 18 m cliff beneath the main hall, hence the Japanese expression ‘jumping off the balcony of Kiyomizu’ to describe taking a major decision. The main hall built in 1633 is designated a national treasure and a World Heritage Site as part of the cultural property of Kyōto.
