Now is the time to go to Dōgo Onsen Honkan while it’s under reconstruction and repair! Is the next chance 100 years from now?!

Dōgo Onsen boasts a history of about 3000 years. The 125-year-old Honkan, the symbol of Dōgo Onsen has been undergoing preservation and repair work since January 2019 while continuting to remain open for business.Altough the construction will not be completed until the end of 2024, the Honkan will remain open even during this period. Moreover, there are plenty of experiences that can only be enjoyed now. This is a unique opportunity in the long history of Dōgo Onsen. It's worth seeing, and worth entering.Don't miss this moment!

Hi-no-Tori (Phoenix) has come! “Dōgo REBORN Project”

The “Dogo REBORN project ” continues to convey its appeal even during this construction period. The symbol is the “Hi no Tori.” Japanese manga(comics) and animation pioneer Osamu Tezuka has continued to draw as his lifework, and the Phoenix, also known as the “Hi no Tori”, makes a spendid collaboration with the Dōgo Onsen Honkan, which is about to be reborn.

Huge art work wraps around the building

An original animation “Hi no Tori Dōgo Onsen edition” produced by Tezuka Productions has been released and Dōgo Onsen Honkan, the main character, will turn into stunning scenery while the project is heating up. To protect the building from wind and rain, the four walls of the scaffolding that completely cover the building under construction have turned into a huge wrapping art.

Sora-no Sanpomichi “Sky walkway”ー the best position from which to see “Hi no Tori”.

The place where you can see “Hi no Tori” flying down with its wings spread is “Dōgo Onsen Sora- no -Sanpomichi” on Kanmuri-yama mountain on the south side of Dōgo Onsen Honkan overlooking the building. In 2019, a garden with seasonal flowers and benches was set, and also a foot bath is available. Why don’t you enjoy a superb view while relaxing?

Walk around and spend time examining the wrapping art.

There are various comic tricks that are hidden in the wrapping art, such as Japanese carpenters with topknots at work, and Prince Shotoku (574 – 622 AD), who is said to have visited Dōgo Onsen, is peeking through the window. Also look for the legendary egret who discovered Dōgo Onsen. Take a walk around the building and search everywhere!

“Now only!” there are many events related to bathing.

The Onsen is open with energy. Now is the time to take a bath! 2 baths, the Kami-no-Yu and the Tama-no-Yu (Tamanoyu) are located on the 1st floor; the Yushinden and the lounging room in the large hall are on the 2nd floor, and there is a private lounging room on the 3rd floor. Only the Kami-no-yu on the first floor can be used just now during the construction work. But, there is no reason to be disappointed that it’s the only one open! There are many fun events that can be enjoyed only now.

Now only! The entrance as at the time of reconstruction in the Meiji Era.

Even the bath tickets are collaborating with Hi-no-Tori for a limited time. Keep the ticket as a souvenir instead of discarding it.

A must-see for women! Now only!

In the Kami-no-yu, which is open during the 1st construction period, there are 2 baths for men, which are the “East bath” and the “West bath.” Back in the day these were both used by men. These are being used now by men and women separately. On each bathroom wall there is a wooden sign that says “Don’t swim, Botchan,” a reminder of a scene depicted in Soseki Natsume’s novel Botchan, which was set in Matsuyama. Until now, only men were able to see this sign. So ladies, don’t miss it! Important information for gentlemen! By the way, the slightly larger bath of the previous Kami-no-yu is now being used by the ladies.

Now is the time to visit! Come to Dōgo Onsen Honkan during the preservation and repair period!

What do you think of these explanatory hints? There are probably many things to discover other than those introduced here. Visit Dōgo Onsen Honkan and enjoy the experiences that you can only have now during the reconstruction.
