Fushimi Inari Shrine
Located in Kyōto’s Fushimi district, this is the head shrine for 30,000 or so Inari Shrines nationwide. It’s said to have been founded in 711. The tunnels of closely-spaced red torii gates winding up the hill are particularly popular with foreign visitors as typically Japanese scenery. In 2014 and 2015 it was number one in a survey of Japanese tourist spots that are popular with foreign visitors. It takes about two hours to walk the 4 km course around Mt. Inari where the shrine is located.
