Uchiko-za Theatre
Index
This full-scale kabuki and folklore theater built in 1916 has a revolving stage, hanamichi runway for actors to make their entrance, and box seats. Until the 1950s it was a popular place for theater-goers, with regular performances. As it deteriorated with ageing, it was once destined to be demolished. However, through a townscape preservation project, the theater was restored, making a new start in 1985. In 2015, it was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
*The theater is currently closed for an extended period for preservation and repair work until around spring 2029. The entire Uchiko-za building is being covered with a sheet from late 2024.
*Tours of the Uchiko-za dressing rooms located at the back of the theater have been open for tours as of October 5th, 2024, with exhibitions unique to a backstage of its kind. Reservations are recommended.
