The people of Matsuyama regard this hearty dish as a kind of soul food. Its distinctive features are the aluminium bowl, sweetish broth and soft noodles. The dish emerged immediately after the war when sweet foods were still rare, and the flavour has been passed down since then. Its flavour and texture differs completely from Sanuki udon from neighbouring Kagawa Prefecture.
