Old Streets of Yōkaichi and Gokoku
Index
This town is the first in Shikoku to be designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It retains many traces of its prosperity from producing Japan wax during the late Edo period through the Taisho era. The 600-meter-long street consists of traditional machiya houses and estates of wealthy merchants. The light yellow clay walls and alleyways made of soil mined in the area add to the uniqueness.
