Isaniwa Shrine

It’s not known when the shrine was founded, but it’s thought to date back at least 1,000 years. It’s one of Matsuyama’s main shrines. The current main building was completed in 1667 by Sadanaga Matsudaira, the third lord of Matsuyama, to give thanks for being selected to perform horseback archery at Edo Castle. Along with Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine in Kyōto and Usa Hachiman Shrine in Ōita, it’s counted as one of Japan’s three main Hachiman-style shrines. It’s designated an important national cultural property.
