Uchiko-za Theatre
Index
This authentic Japanese-style theatre was built in 1916. This is a wooden, two-story theater with a rotating stage, flower paths, and masu (box) seats where plays were performed until around 1950.Scheduled for demolition due to deterioration, the theatre was repaired thanks to the enthusiasm of the local people, and it reopened in 1985. It’s used as base for art and cultural activities and on days when there are no performances, you can tour the theatre and fascinating backstage areas. In 2015 it was designated an important national cultural property.
