The Castle Festival began in 1967 in commemoration of the decision to rebuild Matsuyama Castle’s shōtenshu (small keep tower). It’s held every first weekend (Friday-Sunday) of April in the areas near Matsuyama Castle and the Shiroyama Park Horinouchi district, around the time of the year when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. A variety of events are held with the local residents’ participation for the enjoyment of many tourists and cherry blossom viewers. They include Daimyō Musha Gyōretsu, a parade of men and women dressed up as various historical figures who lived in the Sengoku period (beginning in the mid-15th century) through the Taishō period (early 20th century), national yakyūken contest (yakyūken=a stylized form of “rock-paper-scissors” which originated in Matsuyama), and a singing contest.
